About the Role
OMA is seeking a Modelshop Maker to join our Rotterdam Modelshop team. This is a hands-on, senior-level role suited for an experienced modelmaker with a strong technical foundation, excellent planning and organizational skills, and the ability to manage complex fabrication tasks in a fast-paced architectural environment.
As a Modelshop Maker, you will take on a leadership role in the execution of architectural models, working closely with architects, project leaders, and partners. You will help plan, organize, and deliver high-quality models that support the design process across all project phases.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the fabrication of architectural models, prototypes, and mock-ups, from concept through to final delivery.
- Collaborate with design teams to understand model objectives and develop production strategies.
- Plan work schedules and allocate tasks in line with project deadlines and the Office’s priorities.
- Coordinate material procurement and manage logistics related to model production.
- Maintain a high standard of craftsmanship and model quality.
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of digital and manual equipment (e.g. 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC, table saws, etc.).
- Support regular cleaning and maintenance of the Modelshop to uphold a safe and organized workspace.
- Work closely and collaboratively with Modelshop Assistants, fellow Makers, and the Modelshop Manager to ensure smooth workflows, knowledge sharing, and team cohesion.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior Architects and interns.
Qualifications
- 3–7 years of experience in architectural model-making and workshop fabrication.
- Proficient in woodworking, metalworking, resin casting, soldering, and manual machining.
- Skilled in digital fabrication techniques, including 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC milling.
- Confident using workshop tools and machinery such as table saws, lathes, and milling machines.
- Software proficiency in Rhino, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Understanding of workshop safety standards and maintenance best practices.
